DEATH OF MRS. BLANFORD
----------------------
Former Grinnell Resident Passes Away
at Residence Near Colfax.

A.M. Watson hands us the following clipping from the Colfax Tribune of a former resident of Grinnell--in the eighties.

The death of Mrs. G.W. Blanford on August 19th took from the community and Jasper County, probably the oldest continuous resident and pioneer. At the age of five years she came to this county with her parents and with the exception of a short time while away to school with her children, has continuously made this her home, living on the Blanford home place for 55 years.

The life lived here so many years by this grand pioneer mother has been one of usefulness, high ideals and devotion to her home and community. Following is the obituary:

Mary Ellen Slaughter was born at New London, Henry county, Iowa, April 17th, 1841, and passed away August 19th, 1921, age eighty years, four months and two days. She was the daughter of Joseph and Melinda Slaughter, and when five years of age, came with her parents from Henry county, Iowa, to Jasper county, and has since resided here continuously since 1846, with the exception of a few years residence in Grinnell, Iowa, going there for school facilities for her children.

March 1st, 1863, she was united in marriage with George W. Blanford. To this union eight children were born, five sons and three daughters. Six of her children survive her: W.T. Blanford of Englewood, California; Consuello Winpegler of Colfax, Iowa; Frank S. Blanford of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; J.H. Blanford of Portland, Oregon; Edward and Charles Blanford of Colfax, Iowa. G.W. Blanford, the husband and father, passed away January 3rd, 1917,at the age of nearly eighty-one years.
