Mrs. Geneva M. Ahrens, 81, the wife of Henry C. Ahrens of Rte. 2, Grinnell, died suddenly at her home Sunday noon (April 9). She had been in failing health the last few years.

The daughter of J. Francis and Sidney Jane Parmley Adkins, she was born Aug. 22, 1890, on the farm where the Ahrenses were making theiri home at the time of her death. She attended the Grinnell High School and later was married to Mr. Ahrens July 15, 1908, at Newton.

Mr. and Mrs. Ahrens would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this July. Following their marriage, they moved to South Dakota and farmed on the Rosebud Indian Reservation before homesteading near Colome, S.D. After five years, they returned to Iowa and lived on farms near Newburg and Kellogg before coming to their present farm west of Grinnell 53 years ago.

Mrs. Ahrens was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Victor Grange.

She is survived by her husband Henry; two children, Mrs. Hollis (Verona) Parmley and Leo W. Ahrens, both of Rte. 2, Grinnell; two grandchildren, Mrs. Don (Ann) Allen of Kellogg and Cathy Ahrens of Des Moines; one great grandson, Todd Wesley Allen of Kellogg, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her four brothers and sisters, Will, Robert, Fred and Louis Adkins, Mrs. Gertrude Teutter (Reutter), Mrs. Alice Rice, Mrs. Florence Dearinger, and Mrs. Alta Matteson, as well as her six-day-old infant daughter, Leta Grace.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ahrens will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. J. Eugene Young, minister of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home.
