SARAH WATSON GROSS

Sarah Watson was born Dec. 8, 1825, in Owen county, Indiana, and departed this life July 1, 1911, at her home, 3 miles east of Searsboro at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 23 days. She came to Iowa with her parents in 1852 and settled in Poweshiek county, where she has ever since resided. She was united in marriage Aug. 1860, to Geo. Baker, who died March 24, 1865. To this union two children were born, John P., of Searsboro, and Miss Margarette who lived with her mother and who so willingly and tenderly cared for her during her long illness. In 1867 she was married to Aaron Gross. To this union one child was born, Jesse E., who lived on the farm with his mother. Funeral services were held July 3, 1911, at Blue Point M.E. church conducted by Rev. Martin Gregson, a life-long friend of the deceased.

There was left to mourn the loss, besides her three children, five grandchildren, two brothers and numerous relatives and friends. She was a kind and loving mother and a good neighbor and those who knew her best will miss her most. In the death of Mrs. Gross, Poweshiek county loses one of her oldest settlers, she having resided in this vicinity for 50 years, and has seen the country develop from a few scattering log cabins to a rich and prosperous country. Interment was made in the Blue Point cemetery. The bereaved ones have the heartfelt sympathy of their many friends.--Montezuma Republican.
