Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Carney, who died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R.L. Parker, at Traer, were held Monday afternoon at the family home in Gilman. Rev. John J. Graham, a former pastor of the Congregational church of which Mrs. Carney was a member, was in charge of the services, assisted by Rev. J.A. Caskey. Burial was in Prairie View cemetery.

Relatives present from a distance: Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Parker and daughters, Misses Winifred and Muriel, Traer; Mr. and Mrs. Earl P. Carney, Des Moines; Ralph J. Carney and Mrs. Kate B. Hyatt, Chicago; Dr. Fred S. Carney, Kansas City, Mo.; Misses Frances and Myra Seager, State Teachers College, Cedar Falls.

Mrs. Carney will be remembered by college friends as Martha Emma Browne who graduated from Iowa college in 1874. Mrs. T.J. Noll, a classmate of Mrs. Carney, tells us that of the class of '74 only four members are living, Norman Willis of Decorah, Iowa, Harlow Mills of Claremont, Calif., Frank Kasson of Mattapoisett, Mass., and Mrs. T.J. Noll of Grinnell. Mrs. Carney was an aunt of the late Paul F. Peck.

Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Barbary and Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Noll of Grinnell.

The Gilman Dispatch publishes the following review of Mrs. Carney's life and appreciation of her character:

"Martha Emma Browne was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Dec. 16, 1851. She came with her parents to Waterloo, Iowa, in 1854. Later the family moved to Tama, where she grew to womanhood. Following her public schooling she attended Grinnell college and graduated from that institution in 1874. April 28, 1880, she was married to John M. Carney in Gilman, which was then the home of the Browne family. Mr. Carney died in 1913. Mrs. Carney is survived by her children--Mrs. R.L. Parker, Traer; Mrs. Williard Seager, Gilman; Ralph J. Carney, Chicago, Ill.; Earl P. Carney, Des Moines, Dr. Fred S. Carney, Kansas City, Mo.; also a brother, Fred W. Browne, Seattle, Wash., and a sister, Mrs. Kate B. Hyatt, Chicago, Ill.

"Mrs. Carney was a woman of fine attainments and a cultured mind, and had marked musical ability. She was a noble woman and was always interested in doing whatever she might for the welfare and advancement of her friends and the community. In the home she was ever a guiding spirit to her family to strive for the worthwhile things in life, and the impress of her sweet nature is indelibly impressed upon their character. She was an honored member of the Congregational church for many years. She built her life upon the faith of the devout Christian she was, and her daily life proved her an unselfish and kindly neighbor. Those among whom she lived for so many years attest her goodness. She is now enjoying the reward of the righteous."
