WINFIELD SCOTT DOE

Winfield Scott Doe, youngest son of James M. Doe and Lucinda Dickey Doe was born at Corinth, Vermont, July 17, 1852, and died at the home of his son, Charles, in Montour, Iowa, June 23, 1926, at the age of 73 years, 11 months and six days.

When a young man he left his home in Vermont, going to California but returned in 1877 to marry Susan A. Tenney. To this union two children were born, Charles M. and Mrs. Alice Linville both of Montour.

Three years after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Doe moved to California making that state their home until 1886, when they came to Montour, residing there for ten years.

In 1896 they moved to Grinnell, Iowa, where Mrs. Doe died in 1905. Mr. Doe continued to make Grinnell his home until compelled to go to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in 1914. There he was united in marriage in 1915 to Mrs. Charlotte Meador who survives him.

In February a fatal malady brought him back to Iowa to consult specialists in the hope of obtaining relief.

Mr. Doe was a highly respected citizen and a friendly man, his cheerful disposition making him numerous friends wherever he was known.

He was markedly devoted to his family and the most cherished memories of his children will be of his many extended visits to them in Grinnell.

Funeral services were held in Montour Friday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. E.M. Vittum preached the sermon at the home of his son, C.M. Doe. The services were attended by several who drove up from Grinnell. The body was brought to Grinnell and was laid to rest by the side of his wife, in Hazelwood.
