OBITUARY.

ASHER SHIFFLETT

Asher Shifflett was born in Rockingham county, Va., April 7, 1828. At the age of ten he moved with his parents to Xenia, Ohio, where he resided six years, then moving west to Bureau county, Illinois. On March 1, 1860, he was married at Princeton, Ill., to Laura J. Judd.

In 1866 Mr. and Mrs. Shifflett moved to Poweshiek county, locating in Sheridan township, where their home was for twenty-six years. On December 22, 1892, the family moved to the present home, Grinnell, where Mr. Shifflett passed away January 1, 1913, aged 84 years, 8 months and 24 days. He leaves to mourn him his faithful wife, three sons, George Shifflett, of Pine Grove, Mont., Dr. C.E. Shifflett, of Norton, Kans., and Louis Shifflett, of Grinnell, two daughters, Mrs. Jesse Kingsland and Mrs. George Dunning, of Grinnell, one brother, three sisters, eleven grand children and two great grand children.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.B. Wilson on Friday, January 3, from the Methodist church in Malcom. Interment was also in Malcom. The pallbearers were his sons, George and Louis, his sons-in-law, Jesse Kingsland and George Dunning, and two nephews, Will Shifflett, of Ohio, Ill., and Harry Shifflett, of Earlham, Iowa.

Mr. Shifflett was one of the county's stalwart pioneers. He came to Sheridan township before it was organized, took part in the work of organization, and was a power for good in that community throughout the long years of his residence there and during the years of his less active life in Grinnell. Never a candidate for office himself he was always a good citizen. His last appearance on the streets of Grinnell was on November 5, when he went to the polls to cast his ballot. The next night he was seized by his fatal illness and never left his bed again.

He was a man of strong home ties. There could not be imagined a more loyal and united family than the Shifflett family. Mr. and Mrs. Shifflett observed their golden wedding anniversary on March 1, 1910, and it was the occasion for a notable gathering of children and relatives, who came from far and near to do honor to the occasion.

A good man has gone, leaving behind him the record of a lfie full of good deeds. All who have know him are better for it. He is greatly missed from the community in which he has lived so long.

CARD OF THANKS.

We wish to express Our sincere thanks to those who so kindly assisted during the sickness and death of our beloved husband and father and for the beautiful flowers which showed the sympathy of many friends.
MRS. ASHER SHIFFLETT
AND FAMILY.
