HAMILTON IRVING RHODES
Hamilton Irving Rhodes was born in Jersey, Ohio, August 1, 1836, and died in Grinnell, January 8, 1915, after a long illness, aged 78 years, 5 months and 7 days.
He was the oldest son of Anthony and Abigail Cutler Rhodes. The family moved to Jackson county, Iowa, in 1850.
Mr. Rhodes came to Sheridan township, Poweshiek county, in 1869, and was intimately connected with its early history. He was married to Katherine DeVinney Sept. 4, 1872. Mrs. Rhodes died three years ago and there survive them, their seven children and eleven grandchildren.
Mr. Rhodes was widely known and liked, and to the last of his life he retained his interest and liking for youth and the beautiful in nature.
He was firm in his respect of Sabbath observance, was trained in the Presbyterian church in his youth and always after held that faith in highest regard. He was a man of honesty and integrity, which fact will always be a precious legacy to his children.
Funeral services were held from the home on West street, at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. J.M. Brown conducted the services.
