PAYS TRIBUTE
TO G.L. MILES

Word comes to The Herald of the beautiful funeral service held in The Little Church of the Flowers in Los Angeles for G.L. Miles, a long time resident of Grinnell. The minister in charge was Dr. Herbert Booth Smith, pastor of Immanuel Presbyterian church, the third largest Presbyterian church in the United States. Mr. Booth said in part:

"I like to think of a funeral as a Home Going Service. Christmas is the time to go home--it is a beautiful time with which to associate death.

"George Miles was born in Bath, N.Y., on April 15, 1856, the son of William Miles and Nancy Ann Parker Miles, passing the limit of three score years and ten and living a very successful life. Life isn't a question of how long we live, but how broad we live, how deep and how high we live.

"At the age of nine years, Mr. Miles' family moved to Princeton, Ill., where he met Miss Flora Priestly, his wife, and where they went to school together. It is too precious almost to mention here, but this marriage must have been a match made in heaven. Many times people marry later in life and marry someone entirely different from the one they fell in love with early in life--this was not so in this case; it seemed that this boy and girl fell in love early. They were married in 1881 and went to live on a farm near Lewis, Iowa, where two daughters were born. After four years they moved to Tipton, Iowa, and then to Grinnell, Iowa, noted for its fine college. I think the father and mother wanted the collegiate advantages for their children.

"Mr. Miles was in the hardware business until 1912 and then he retired, coming to California frequently, and finally with his family to make their home here, in 1919. Mrs. Miles survives him and two children, Miss R. May Miles of Los Angeles and Mrs. Glenn Clark of St. Paul, and three grandchildren, Helen May, Marian and Miles Clark.
