JOHN HOTCHKIN

John Hotchkin, a pioneer of Jasper county, passed from our midst on Tuesday, December 12, 1911, at 1:15 A.M. after a very short illness. He was suddenly taken with stomach trouble with which he bore patiently and uncomplainingly to the end. He was born in Lincolnshire county, England, August 6, 1832, having attained the age of seventy-nine years, four months and six days at the time of his death. He came to America at about the age of nineteen and lived in New York City, where he was united in marriage to Rose Anna Gaughran, who died two years and six months ago. There were nine children, eight of whom are living and were present at the funeral. They are: John H. and Mrs. John Kelly, of Grinnell, Charles A., of Chicago, William A. and Phillip E., of Newton, Mrs. Jas. P. McLaughlin of Knoxville, Ia., Mrs. Martin W. Flanagan, of Sully, and James A., of Searsboro. He also leaves thirty-seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hotchkin came to Rock Creek township in early days and settled on the farm on which he since resided. He was a kind husband and father, a good citizen and will be greatly missed in this community and by all who knew him.

Funeral services were held Thursday morning at the Catholic church in this city, conducted by Rev. James Custin, of Brooklyn. Interment was by the side of his wife, in Hazelwood.
