JOHN BARKER SERVICES SET

John S. Barker, 80, of the Wiltfang Apartments died Thursday morning, Aug. 11, at Pella Community Hospital as a result of injuries he sustained July 11 when struck by a car which jumped a curb in the Pella business district.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Smith (Funeral) Home, with the Rev. James Russell of the Grinnell United Methodist Church officiating.

Organist will be Alice Renaud, and vocalist will be Gordon VanDonselaar. Pallbearers will be Frank L. Brown, Merle C. Dimit, Arthur Osborn, Lester W. Osborn, Donald Souter and Lyle O. Wiley.

Fraternal rites will be conducted by members of I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 358. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of George VanEmman and Catharine Isabel McIntosh Barker, he was born Sept. 12, 1902, at Mt. Zion in Van Buren County. He attended rural school and the schools of Keosauqua.

He was married to Iris Martha Augustine on April 14, 1928, at Birmingham. The couple farmed in Van Buren and Louisa counties before moving to the Rock Creek community west of Grinnell in 1948. They lived in Rock Creek for 14 years before moving to Grinnell in 1962.

Mr. Barker was employed for 16 years by Drs. Floyd and Earl Beaver and Ronald Hauser in their veterinary office before retiring in 1979. He was a past noble grand of I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 358 and a member of Rebekah Lodge No. 119, both of Grinnell. He was also a member of the Victor Grange.

Survivors include his wife, Iris; his children, Twyla Wells of Grinnell and Stanley E. Barker of Boise, Idaho; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edith Dodds and Martha Danielson, both of Fairfield, and Josephine Wells of Cantril; and one brother, Ralph Barker of Keosauqua.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Verne, Hugh and Arnold Barker; and one sister, Catharine Fair.
