JOHN GILMORE, SERVICES HELD SATURDAY

The funeral of John Gilmore was conducted by the Rev. Howard Hayes Saturday afternoon, July 29, at the Steffy Funeral Home.

Music was provided by Gordon Van Donselaar, soloist, accompanied by Miss Alice Underwood, organist. Interment was at Jackson Township Cemetery with Ronald Bates, Gerald Bates, Donald Bates, John Bates, Ned Bates and Paul Bates serving as casket bearers.

Military services were conducted by an honor detail from the Blakley-Stevens Post of the American Legion.

Mr. Gilmore, 89, died Thursday, July 27, at St. Francis Hospital in Grinnell.

The son of William and Phebe Rathbun Gilmore, he was born on a farm near Deep River on Nov. 26, 1877. He attended the Gilmore School which was located on his parents' farm.

During the Spanish-American War he enlisted in the Army and served one year in Cuba. Mr. Gilmore was the last Spanish-American veteran living in Poweshiek County.

On June 20, 1900, he was united in marriage with Maude Johnston. To this union two children were born. They made their home in Poweshiek County with the exception of a period from 1908 to 1912 when they homesteaded in Montana. They moved to Montezuma in 1932 where he was a real estate broker.

Mr. Gilmore was a member of the Fairmont Church and later transferred his membership to the Montezuma Methodist Church.

Since the death of his wife in 1958, he has made his home with his daughter and her husband. The past six months he has been cared for in a Grinnell Nursing Home.

He is survived by his son, Cecil of Los Angeles, Calif.; his daughter, Leta Hollmann of Malcom; two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Edgar Gilmore of Billings, Mont.
