HELEN L. GUGELER

Helen L. Gugeler, 97, of Grinnell died Monday, Oct. 1, at the Mayflower Health Care Center.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Carman Center of the Mayflower, with the Rev. Carol Myers officiating. Pianist will be Alice Renaud. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She was the daughter of Edgar and Kitty Rowley Raffety and was born April 20, 1904, on the family farm southwest of Grinnell. She moved to Hanlontown with her family and graduated from Hanlontown High School. She received her B.A. degree from the University of Northern Iowa and her M.A. degree from the University of Iowa.

She was married to Mark A. McAllister June 4, 1931, in Meeke County, Minn. They lived in Fairmont, N.D., and later moved to a farm in Henry County, Iowa.

She taught school in the Mediapolis, Burlington and North Linn school districts, retiring in 1971 after 25 years and moved to the Mayflower.

Following the death of her husband in 1963, she was married to Harold C. Gugeler Nov. 20, 1971.

She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women's Club, Grinnell Chapter of the D.A.R., the Searchlight Club and the League of Women Voters.

Surviving are one son, Jon McAllister of Vancouver, Wash., and one sister, Frances Woodard of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; two children, Rosemary and Steven McAllister; four sisters, Stella Van Riper, Bernice Schneiter, Ethel Kisner and Olive Lincoln; and three brothers, Lloyd, Ernest and Clark Raffety.
