MRS. J.R. DUFFUS
PASSES AWAY

(From the County Star, Pipestone, Minn.)

Mrs. J.R. Duffus, beloved resident of this city, passed to her eternal rest Monday night, death ending an extended period of suffering, and closing a long and useful life. She passed away about 11:30 o'clock, pneumonia being the direct cause of her death.

Mr. and Mrs. Duffus have long been residents of Pipestone, and Mr. Duffus, who is in quite feeble health, will sadly miss his devoted companion of almost 56 years.

Funeral services conducted by Dr. E.H. Knehans of the Methodist church, were held t 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, at the home of her son, Clifford D. Duffus, 121 South Main. Mr. and Mrs. Tad A. Bailey, close friends of the deceased, sang two duets, "In the Garden" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus."

The burial was in Woodlawn cemetery, the following gentlemen acting as pall bearers: W.J. Mackay, D.E. Jones, W.E. Bushnell, E.F. Feldman, Martin Kallemeyn and S.H. Wilson.

Jennie Shearer, daughter of James and Ann Leslie Shearer, was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, May 21, 1854, and at the time of her death was 78 years, 5 months and 3 days old.

In 1872 she moved with her parents to the United States, settling near Malcom, Iowa, and for many years resided in that vicinity. There on Dec. 24, 1876, she was united in marriage with John R. Duffus, who survives her.

The late Mrs. Duffus was, in girlhood, a member of the Presbyterian church. While living in the vicinity of Malcom, however, she and Mr. Duffus took an active part, late in the year 1888, in organizing the first church in their locality, which was of the Methodist faith. She joined that church, and during the remainder of her life was a devout worker in that denomination. The first pastor of the church which Mr. and Mrs. Duffus helped to organize was Rev. Matt S. Hughes (now deceased) who later was a prominent Methodist Bishop. Among the singers who often assisted with the services at this new church was Grace Reed, then of Brooklyn, Ia., now Mrs. Tad. A. Bailey of Pipestone.

Mr. and Mrs. Duffus and family moved to Pipestone in the fall of 1898, and have since made their (the rest is cut off)...

Duffus of Pipestone; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; four sisters: Mrs. Mary Wilson of Goldfield, Ia., Mrs. Helen Bramer, Mrs. Joy Wilson and Miss Margaret Shearer, all of Grinnell, Ia. J.D. Berry of Pipestone is a nephew of the late Mrs. Duffus.

The two last mentioned sisters arrived here before Mrs. Duffus passed away and remained to attend the funeral. Others who came to attend the funeral were: Carlton Duffus, grandson of the deceased, St. Paul; Leslie V. Wilson, nephew of the deceased, Excelsior, Minn.; Mrs. James Nowak of Malcom, Ia.; Alex Duffus of Osceola, Ia.; A. L. Duffus and wife, Brooklyn, Ia., the Messrs, Duffus last mentioned being respectively brother and nephew of J.R. Duffus.
