THOMAS TONE, 74, DIES OF INJURIES
SUSTAINED IN DUBUQUE CAR CRASH

A July 11th traffic accident near Dubuque has claimed the life of a prominent Grinnell area resident.

Victim was Thomas J. Tone, 74, of Rte. 4, Grinnell, who died Thursday evening at a Dubuque hospital of injuries received in the crash.

Funeral services were held this afternoon (Monday) from the First Baptist church here with the pastor, the Rev. Wayne Shireman officiating. Organ music was provided by Ed Bohstedt.

Serving as pallbearers were Vern Brooke, Thomas Berthusen, Leonard Evans, Guilford Moore, Raymond Pilgrim and LaForest Sherman. Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery.

Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the First Baptist church.

Born Mar. 15th, 1890, in Tama county, he was the son of Andrew and Madlin Norland Tone. The family moved to Poweshiek county where he received his education in the local rural schools. During World War I he served with the armed forces.

On June 15th, 1921, he was united in marriage with Frances Smith at Grinnell. To this union were born a son and a daughter, Melvin N. Tone of Dubuque and Mrs. Ruth Schalet of New York City. Also surviving, in addition to his wife and children, are two grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Esther Melrose of Waterloo, Mrs. Bertha Shinn of Manchester, Conn., and Mrs. Martha Toepfer of Idaho Falls, Ida.; and two brothers, David Tone of Sterling, Ill., and Andres Tone of Grinnell.

For 15 years following his marriage, he farmed near Gilman and then moved to a farm southeast of Grinnell where the family has made a permanent home.

He was a member of the First Baptist church, American Legion, and Hopeful Barracks of the Grinnell Association of World War I Veterans. Also, he was a trustee of Grant township for several years.
