Justice of the Peace,
City Employee 27 Years
Dies After Long Illness

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home for C.L. Cole, 74, Grinnell justice of the peace, who died Saturday at his home after an illness of about a year.

Survivors include his widow Jessie and one child, Dr. Florence B. Cole of Tallahassee, Fla. Also surviving are a brother, Orville Cole of Hot Springs, Ark., and two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Jenkins of Grinnell and Mrs. Dora Holden of Oskaloosa.

Charles Leroy Cole, the son of the late Joshua Cole and *Cynthia Rucker Cole, was born Nov. 12, 1882, at Grinnell. He was married Sept. 3, 1902, to Jessie Leah Robison. Two children preceded him in death--Lulu and Floyd, in childhood.

A justice of the peace for Grinnell, Cole worked for the city for 27 years. He spent his lifetime in Grinnell. His father and grandfather were in the harness business in Grinnell for a number of years.

Always interested in poetry, he was named Poet Patron of America in 1947.

The Rev. Leland Mann, minister of the Congregational church, officiated at the services. Burial was at Hazelwood cemetery. Music was furnished by Mrs. Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers were Earl Brown, Paul Gearhart, Gerald Kahler, Gerald Phipps, Wiley Taylor, and William R. Welsh. Flower bearers were Mrs. Earl Brown and Mrs. William R. Welsh.

Honorary pallbearers were Glenn Bell, George Decatur, Lawrence Decatur, Ross Coutts, John Hotchkin, and Homer Lowrey.
