MRS. CHARLES S. BARNES
Charlotte Augusta Leach as born at Brewer, Maine, Janaury 6, 1850; and died at her home in Grinnell, Iowa, March 19, 1914, aged 64 years, 2 months, and 13 days. On her twentieth birthday she was united in marriage to Charles S. Barnes. Leaving the old home, they came to Iowa, arriving in Grinnel March 14, 1874. This has been their home ever since. To this union four children were born. Edna Augusta, the eldest, died in Montana, October 6, 1911. Three children survive her: Mrs. Margaret Bertha Porter of Big Sandy, Montana, and Nora Elizabeth and Cedric Albert of Grinnell. These, with the faithful husband, mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother.
Mrs. Barnes was the last surviving charter member of the Beulah Chapter of the Eastern Star Lodge. For some time past she has been in feeble health. She was a quiet, sensitive soul, and those who knew her best speak confidently of her faith in Christ, and her piety which revealed itself in life more than in words. She rests from her labors, and her loved ones mourn not as those without hope. The funeral was at the home, where the large number of old friends and neighbors, and the many floral offerings, attested the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Rev. F.H. Webster, of the Baptist Church spoke briefly from 2 Cor. 5:4, while the Eastern Star Quartette rendered appropriate music. Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery, the Eastern Star Lodge having charge, and using their beautiful and impressive ritual.
