Matt Lyons was born in Dublin, Ireland, April 21, 1842, and died at his home in Grinnell, August 27, 1929. He came to this country when about seven years of age, living first at Freeport, Ill. After living at Freeport for a few years, the family moved slowly westward, helping to build the Northwestern railroad. Mr. Lyons was still a young man when he reached Chelsea, where he lived for many years.

He was married to Annie Drahas at Chelsea in 1882. Mr. Lyons was a farmer near Chelsea and Grinnell for many years, moving to Grinnell about forty years ago. Mr. Lyons was a good husband and father, and had the respect and love of his many friends.

Mr. Lyons was a kind, genial gentleman. He was willing and helpful. His words were always gracious and only goodness was in his heart. As a neighbor he was kind and generous. He gave of his time and thought to be helpful to others and in all respects those who knew him held him in the highest possible esteem.

He is survived by his widow and six children: Joe Lyons of Lannagan, Mo., George Lyons of Chicago; James Lyons of Carroll; Mrs. Delia Patton of Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. Tillie Shultz of Chicago; and Mary Lyons of Grinnell.

Mr. Lyons, himself, was the last of a family of nine.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning from St. Mary's church, conducted by Rev. Father M.J. Hannon. Interment was in the Chelsea cemetery.
