PHILLIP STEWART

Phillip Stewart, 77, of 625 Reed St., Grinnell, died Wednesday, May 4, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers were Adam Dawson; Mark Lloyd; Joshua, Richard and Travis Pagel; and Robert Stewart. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of Nute and Molly Ellis Stewart, he was born Oct. 1, 1916, in Kirksville, Mo. He was raised and educated in Kirksville and moved to Grinnell in 1937 where he worked for area farmers. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the Pacific theater.

He was married to Emma Vanous Nov. 3, 1947, in Kellogg. Mr. Stewart worked as a carpenter for Miller-Lindhorst Co. and, later, Dick Sanders. He began his own business in 1962 and retired in 1978.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Connie Stewart of Santa Monica, Calif., and Betty Pagel of Brooklyn; one son, Robert of Grinnell; three sisters, Juanita Schriner of Salem, Ore., Eva Dixon of Sweet Home, Ore., and Gladys Young of Beaverton, Ore.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Hank, and a grandson.
