LAST SERVICES ARE HELD FOR EARL WALTER HUGHES

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at four o'clock at the Baptist church near Newburg for Earl W. Hughes who passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines Friday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. Charles R. Rowe officiated at the services with the American Legion from Grinnell, Kellogg and Newburg being in charge of the grave service. Music was furnished by a mixed quartet composed of John Koger, Betty Mason, Verna Burroughs and Virgil Palmer. Pall bearers were Lewis Koger, Charles Huff, Oliver Mulford, Truman Heishman, Grant Heishman and William Paul.

Earl Walker Hughes was born at Marshalltown, Iowa, January 12, 1897 and died May 28, 1937.

At the age of six years he moved with his parents to Grinnell where he received his education in the local schools. After he grew to manhood he worked in the rural communities, until he enlisted in the World War on January 12, 1918, on his twenty-first birthday.

He was stationed at Camp Sevier, S.C. for a while, then transferred to Taylor Field in Alabama. He was later sent to San Antonio, Kelly Field. He was later returned to Montgomery, Alabama where he was discharged March, 1919.

He has been a member of the Lewis C. Murdock Post of the American Legion for the last six years. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Reed of Grinnell and Mrs. Mattie Randall of Marshalltown, three half sisters, Mrs. Lillian Colden and Mrs. Arthur Bradford of California, Mrs. Hattie Knight of Washington State, and a half brother, Dall Hughes of Gresham, Oregon, and a host of other relatives and friends. His parents and other sister preceded him in death.

Earl Walter Hughes was uncomplaining throughout his illness and he kept himself busy making poppies for the benefit of disabled veterans.
