MARY E. GILLILAND
Mary E. Gilliland, 97, of Grinnell died on Tuesday, May 3, at Friendship Manor in Grinnell.
Graveside services for Mary Gilliland will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 6, at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Pallbearers will be Chuck, Don and Rick Gilliland, Gene Shook and Randy Smith.
Visitation will be held Friday morning an hour prior to the service at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, with the family present.
The daughter of William H. and Sarah Ann Gregson Stull, she was born April 16, 1908, near Ewart. She was raised in the Ewart area and attended schools in the Montezuma School District.
On July 3, 1926, she married Hugh Raymond Gilliland in St. Paul, Minn., where they lived for several months while Raymond worked for the railroad. The couple then moved to a farm in Fayette County, near Arlington, and later farmed in Poweshiek County, near Montezuma. They moved to Grinnell in 1936 and for several years operated a grocery store in Lynnville.
She was a homemaker and kept active raising her seven children. She had been a resident of Friendship Manor since 2001.
She is survived by her children, Rose Shockley of Newton, Alice Johnson of Grinnell, Charles Gilliland of Grinnell, John Gilliland of Marshalltown and William Gilliland of Grinnell; 21 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Hugh "Bud" and Robert Gilliland; and one grandchild.
Memorial contributions may be directed towards St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell.
