EARL M. FOUTS RITES TUESDAY
Earl M. Fouts, 47,of 1309 Reed St., Grinnell, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home Thursday. His body was discovered by a member of his family at about 5:30 p.m.
The son of Martin and Alma Smith Fouts, Mr. Fouts was born in Pisgah, Iowa, on Oct. 29, 1922. He graduated from Logan High School in 1941.
On March 29, 1942, he married Mary Anne Morrow at Logan, Iowa. To this marriage were born six children.
During World War II, Mr. Fouts served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific with the Marine Air Group No. 61. Following his discharge he became associated with the General Telephone Co. serving in several communities in Iowa and Nebraska.
In 1960, Mr. Fouts came to Grinnell where he had been Grinnell area manager of General Telephone.
Mr. Fouts was president of the Grinnell Baseball Association for seven years and was active in organizing the summer baseball program in Grinnell. He was also vice president of the Grinnell Rotary Club and a member of the Focht-Tennant Post 53 of the Grinnell American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Anne; six children--Karen Ann Fouts, formerly a captain in the Army Nurse Corps, of Onawa, Iowa, Michael Earl Fouts, a student at the University of Nebraska, Cpl. John Martin Fouts of Chu Lai, Vietnam, a member of the Marine Air Wing, Mrs. Roger (Susan Louise) Benson of Grinnell, Mrs. Steven (Mary Jo) Arthur of Panora, Iowa and Mrs. Gene (Christine Elizabeth) Ford of Grinnell; one grandson, Robert Steven Arthur of Panora; two brothers--Chester Fouts of Missouri Valley and Ben Southworth of Waterloo, Iowa; and four sisters--Mrs. Robert (Arlo) Ross of Onawa, Iowa, Mrs. William (Darlene) Smith of Onawa, Iowa, Mrs. Richard (Lois) Pfeifer of Sliverton, Ore., and Mrs. Bette Molitor of Lewiston, Idaho.
Mr. Fouts was preceded in death by his father in 1922; his mother in 1959; one brother, Clarence Fouts, and two sisters--Mrs. Louise McMains and Mrs. Louella Brown.
Requiem Mass for Mr. Fouts will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday (June 2) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Leo V. Kuebrich, pastor of the church, officiating.
Organist will be Mrs. Willard Heffner. Pallbearers will be Calvin Kingery, Alvin Sheeler, Bill Schrader, Roger Stewart, Frank Reitzler and Melvin Storbeck.
Burial will be made in Mt. Carmel Cemetery at Missouri Valley, Iowa, at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Rosary wil lbe recited t 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home where friends may call.
