Amelia Rice was born in Pennsylvania in 1830. In the early fifties she came to Clayton Co., Iowa. Here she married Hezekiah Hughes. Her husband enlisted in the 9th Iowa and received a severe wound, which caused his death a year or two after the close of the war. Five children were born to this marriage, all of whom live in Grinnell, Mrs. John Decatur, Mrs. Clay Rouse, Will F., Charles E. and Ben F. Mrs. Hughes and her children became residents of Grinnell about twenty years ago. Soon after coming here they built the house where Mrs. Hughes died in southeast Grinnell. Mrs. Hughes was one of the hardy pioneers of Iowa and was a willing worker. Her death occurred at her home yesterday morning at nine o'clock. Her age was 68 years. The funeral is tomorrow afternoon.
