HIT BY CAR, WOMAN, 82, DIES

A Grinnell woman died Saturday afternoon of injuries she sustained when struck by a car in the 600 block of Sixth Ave.

Police said Dolora Decatur, 82, of 1117 West St. was on her way to a supermarket when she stepped into the path of a car driven by Melissa Reams shortly before 8 p.m. Friday. After initial treatment at Grinnell General Hospital, she was flown by Air Care helicopter to University Hospitals in Iowa City where she later died.

No charges were filed in connection with the accident.

Funeral services for Mrs. Decatur will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with burial in Hazelwood Cemetery.

OBITUARY

The daughter of John H. and Mary M. Hodoval Schwab, she was born Sept. 1, 1901, in Willow Grove Township, Jasper County. In 1904, she moved with her family to a farm north of Grinnell. She graduated from Grinnell High School in 1923 and later attended Grinnell College.

She was married to James Harlan Cratty on May 17, 1924, and the couple lived in Grinnell. Mr. Cratty, a restaurant and service station operator, died in 1967.

She was married to Lawrence Decatur on Aug. 23, 1971, in Grinnell, and the couple lived just west of the city limits. Mr. Decatur died in 1977.

Mrs. Decatur was a member of Beulah Chapter No. 47 of the Order of Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary. She had worked as a librarian at Stewart Library and for Iowa Southern Utilities Co. here.

Survivors include her step-daughters, Mildred Jacobs of Rialto, Calif., Doris Garrigan of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Marilyn Monsma of Manitou Springs, Colo., six step-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; three brothers, Joseph L., Charles and Lyle Schwab; two half-brothers, George and Martin Schwab; and one half-sister, Mae Davenport.
