ALBERT MEHLIN

One of the old guard of Poweshiek county ended a long and useful and happy life last week. Albert Mehlin was one of the men whom everybody in the county knew, liked and trusted. He had lived in the county ever since 1868, coming first to Sheridan township. For many years he had conducted a store in Newburg and it was here that he was stricken down by apoplexy last Tuesday, dying on Thursday at the home of his niece, in Newburg.

The funeral was held from the home on Fourth Avenue on Sunday afternoon. Rev. Elias Handy conducted the services and spoke words of hope and comfort and of well merited appreciation of the useful life which had ended. A male quartet composed of Messrs. Davis, Morrison, Dungan and Harriman, furnished music. The home was beautifully decorated by the floral tributes sent by a very wide circle of friends. Interment was made in Hazelwood cemetery, whither the body was escorted by the Knights of Pythias, of which Mr. Mehlin was a member.

Those attending the funeral from out of town were:

Mr. Chas. Hechtner, Chariton, Ia.
Mr. and Mrs. John Hechtner, Sac City, Ia.
Mrs. J. Johnston, Princeton, Ill.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Dremann, Princeton, Ill.

Albert Mehlin, son of John and Elizabeth Mehlin, was born at Weil, Baden, Germany, September 16, 1850.

His parents emigrated to Calhoun county, Ill., in 1854 and two years later moved to Princeton, Ill., Bureau county. While living here he was confirmed in the German Lutheran church.

In the spring of 1868, Mr. Mehlin moved to Sheridan township, Poweshiek county, Iowa, where on November 16, 1875, he was married to Miss Caroline Warner, who departed from this life the 24th day of November, 1883.

To this union three children were born all of whom survive him and were present when he passed away. They are: Mrs. Ella Williams, of Oberlin, Ohio; Mr. John H. Mehlin, of Grinnell, Iowa; Mr. Albert J. Mehlin, of Des Moines, Iowa.
