ELMA AMENDT RITES TODAY

Elma Amendt, 79, of 609 Main St., Grinnell, died Monday (Oct. 15) at Grinnell General Hospital.

The daughter of Charles F. and Fredaricka Osten Achtemeier, she was born Sept. 15, 1894, in Marshall County near Laurel. She received her education in the rural schools of the community. She was baptized June 1, 1896, at St. John's Lutheran Church near Newton, and on May 31, 1908, she was confirmed in that church. She joined St. John's Evangelical Church in Haverhill in 1913, and transfered her membership at the time of her death.

She was married to Arthur R. Amendt on Jan. 29, 1913, at her parents' home in Marshall County, and they farmed until his death in 1937. Mrs. Amendt had made her home in Grinnell since 1938.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Rosa) Lollar of Garland, Tex., and Mrs. Edwin (Wanda) Peterson of Kellogg; three sons, Gilbert Amendt of Phoenix, Ariz., LeRoy Amendt of Whittier, Calif., and Cdr. L. Dale Amendt of Lexington Park, Md.; two brothers, Lawrence and Walter Achtemeier, both of Marshalltown; five sisters, Mrs. Cora Dye of Laurel and Mrs. Laura Blackwell, Mrs. Marie Ballard, Mrs. Golda Bartein, and Mrs. Ruby Whalen, all of Marshalltown; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 21, 1937; a daughter, Ruby, on Dec. 22, 1921; her parents; two sisters, Dora Parker and Vera Hansen; and a grandson, Gary Wayne McGriff.

Funeral services for Mrs. Amendt were held at 1:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at the James-Schalinske Funeral Home. Larry Sturgis, student pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, officiated, and burial was in St. John's Evangelical Cemetery near Haverhill. Vocalist was Gordon Van Donselaar, and organist was Kathleen Heffner. Serving on the flower committee were Gayle Amendt and Carmen McGriff. Pallbearers were Clair D. McGriff, Larry E. McGriff, Vernon Lollar, Raymond A. Parker, and Edwin M. Peterson.
