Funeral services for Charles Leslie Matteson were conducted from the Frank Matteson home in Rock Creek Saturday afternoon at one o'clock by Rev. George Blagg. Appropriate hymns were sung by Mrs. Roscoe Dempster and Miss Loie Stevens. Bearers were: A.V. Robison, Luther Parmley, G.A. Elliott, and F.M., R.H. and W.M. Adkins. Burial was in the Westfield cemetery beside his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Matteson.

Charles Leslie Matteson was born September 14, 1863, in Rock Creek township, Jasper County, Iowa, and passed away February 9, 1928, at the home of his brother, Frank Matteson. He was united in marriage with Sophia Peterson, Jan. 25, 1887. To this union one son was born. In 1902 he and his family moved to Vandalia, Mo. His wife preceded him in death Jan. 17, 1917. He is survived by his son, Leslie Matteson of La Cygne, Kansas, and three grand-children, two brothers, Geo. M., Winner, S.D. and Frank E. of Grinnell, one sister, Mrs. Ellen Woodard of Long Beach, Calif. Mr. Matteson was one of a family of eleven children, seven of whom preceded him in death.

Mr. Matteson was the youngest son of Perry Matteson, one of the real pioneers in this section. He came to Rock Creek township before 1850, built himself a cabin and laid the foundations for his farm before Grinnell was settled. When the first settlers in Grinnell were laying the foundation for their home on the prairie they located in the timber and some of them at least stayed with Mr. Matteson while they were sawing lumber in the mill which stood not far from the present Hadley house.

The family endured all the privations of early frontier and pioneer life and grew up into good citizens. The father for many years was teacher at number 6 Rock Creek, and there are many still living who went to school to him.
