--Mr. Perry Matteson was born in Chenango Co., N.Y., near the town of Jefferson April 4, 1819. At the age of 21 he came to Ill. where he lived for about two years. From Illinois he came to Burlington, Iowa. In the spring of 1850, he came and entered the home place, west of Grinnell, from the government and resided there till his death. In 1844 he was married to Miss Fannie Altig. Eleven children were born to them, of whom 9 are still living. His wife preceded him, dyng in 1871. He died Wednesday night, Mar. 19, 1902, at the age of 82 yrs. 11 mo. 15 days. The funeral services were conducted at the house Sunday morning, March 23rd, by Rev. J.T. Marvin, at 10 o'clock. From there his remains were taken to the Westfield cemetery and interred there. There was a large gathering of friends and neighbors with whom he left a pleasing memory. Six of the nine children were present at the funeral. They were James Matteson of Yale, Frank Matteson of Turner, Mrs. Mary Moore, L.L. Matteson and Mrs. George Woodard of Grinnell, and Charles Matteson who lives on the Matteson homestead.
