RITES HELD FOR MRS. WINCHELL

Elsie Winchell, 90, died Saturday morning, Jan. 12, at St. Francis Manor.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Philip Ramstad, pastor of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and pallbearers were Charles Frese, Theodore Frese, James Jiras, Raymond Jiras, Steven Scheetz and Thomas Scheetz. Burial was in the Oxford Cemetery at Oxford.

The daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Frese Warthman, she was born March 20, 1894, at Oxford. She graduated from Oxford High School in 1912 and later attended business college in the Quad Cities.

On Oct. 12,1917, she was married to Benjamin Winchell at Aledo, Ill. They lived in Rock Island until 1921 when they moved to Chicago, returning to Rock Island in 1926 and operating a small neighborhood grocery store.

Mr. Winchell died in 1940, and Mrs. Winchell came to Grinnell in 1958 to live with her sister. She was a member o the United Church of Christ-Congregational and the Neighborhood Club.

She is survived by one step-daughter, Jane Smith of Gibsonia, Pa.; two step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marjorie Smiley of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant son, and an infant brother.
