RUTH MAE HAMMEN

Ruth Mae Hammen, 77, died at the family home near Johnston, Ia., on Aug. 20, 1988, of complications resulting from Alzheimers Disease.

The daughter of Allen and Grace Crull Yount, Ruth was born near Hartwick on Sept. 19, 1910. At an early age the family moved to Brooklyn where she received her education. Upon graduation in 1928, she moved to Des Moines where she received secretarial training at Capitol City Commercial College while living and working at the YWCA. Secretarial employment after graduation and throughout her lifetime included Bankers Life, Meredith Publishing company, Epworth United Methodist Church, Kelly Services and Otis Elevator Co.

Ruth was a housewife, mother, secretary and active church member and leader at Epworth UMC. She was active with Des Moines Urban Mission Council and Des Moines Area Religious Council. In addition she belonged to Eastern Star.

Ruth was married to Peter H. Hammen on June 13, 1939. To this union two sons were born, Donald L. of Minneapolis, Minn., and Richard A. Hammen of Johnston. The family lived in Des Moines until 1986 when they moved to Johnston.

In addition to her husband and sons Ruth is survived by one sister, Edith Kriegel of Olympia, Wash., three brothers Fred Yount of Brooklyn, Claude Yount of Olympia, Wash., and Lewis Yount of Bellevue, Wash., and two granddaughters, Kim and Kris Hammen.

Memorial services were held at Epworth United Methodist Church on August 23.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders Association, Des Moines Chapter and Epworth United Methodist Church of Des Moines.
