ELSIE M. BYERLY

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25, at Nevenhoven Funeral Home in Brooklyn, for Elsie M. Byerly, 97, of Brooklyn, who died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1997, in the Brookhaven Nursing Home in Brooklyn.

The Rev. Andrew Gorter, the husband of a granddaughter and pastor of the Harderwyk Christian Reformed Church of Holland, Mich., officiated. Organist Marilyn Kriegel and soloist Joan Gerard performed "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art." Casketbearers were Brent Heinen, Chris Hansen, Curt Hansen, Craig Hansen, Phillip Bartachek and Brian Bartachek. Interment was in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery.

Elsie May Foreman Byerly, daughter of John Wesley Foreman and Mary Elzina "Dolly" Stemen Foreman, was born Feb. 19, 1899, in Clarke County, Iowa.

She received her education in rural school and attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, for two years. She taught rural schools in Michigan for one year and three years in Iowa.

On Sept. 2, 1922, she was married to Kendly Crisman Byerly in New Virginia. They farmed near Guernsey, Hartwick and Brooklyn before moving to Clarke County,where they farmed for nine years. They returned to the Victor area and later to a farm near Brooklyn. Mr. Byerly died April 2, 1979.

Later Mrs. Byerly moved into Hillside Apartments where she lived until becoming a resident of Brookhaven Nursing Home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister, Grace Lingle, and three brothers, Frank, Clarence and Lonnie Foreman.

Surviving are one daughter, Arlene, and her husband, Howard Heinen of Brooklyn; three sons and their wives, Gerald and Marjorie Byerly of Deep River, Wayne and Betty Byerly of Nixa, Mo., and Dale and Doris Byerly of Mondovi, Wis.; one brother, Leslie Foreman of Riverside, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren .
