The Grinnell (IA) Herald; Oct. 26, 1900
--Mary Elizabeth Paige was born in Vermont, January 22, 1832, and died at Grinnell, Iowa, October 22, 1900. When a child she moved with her parents to Rock Creek, Ohio, and later to Oberlin, Ohio, where she united with the Congregational church. Here she was married in March, 1857, to Richard Whitney. To this union were born four children--May E., George A., Alice, and Almer O. The family moved from Oberlin to Jackson, Michigan, and from here came to Grinnell in the spring of 1862, and have lived here ever since, with the exception of two years spent in Oskaloosa. The deceased leaves a husband, two children, five brothers and five sisters to mourn her loss; two children, Alice and Almer, and four brothers and sisters having preceded her in death. Mrs. Whitney had been in poor health for a long time, and suffered intensely the past two weeks, so that death came as a welcome release from her pain. She lived among Grinnell people as a high minded christian woman, honored and loved by all. Her life was a blessing to those who knew her, and the memory of her christian life is a sweet recollection to her relatives. The funeral occurred at her late home at 2:30 o'clock, Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. E.M. Vittum. The family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in the loss of their loved one.
