OBITUARY
Miss Asenath Tracy Sleggel was born in Holmes county, Ohio, February 9, 1833 and died May 8, 1906, aged 73 years, 2 months and 29 days.
Her early life was spent in Ohio. Some of her brothers came to Iowa about 1860 and she with her parents came in 1868. Of a family of eleven children she had six brothers and four sisters. All of the sisters and her parents preceded her in death. Only two of the brothers are living, both of whom were present at her burial. Not having married she made her home with others of her family and for the past twenty-five years, with her brother, D.C. Sleggel of Bear Creek township, except the five or six years when she lived in Brooklyn. For a long number of years she was a great sufferer. For the past nine years she was confined to her chair, unable to walk. Every effort that love, care and means could make for her recovery was put forth, but to no avail. She bore her lot nobly, often discouraged that she could not take part in life like others, yet bearing up under it all with resignation and cheerfulness. Sitting in her chair she kept her hands as busy as she was able, and drew about her books and peridicals which kept her in touch with the best of the wide world. She was a member of the Methodist church in Brookyn, Iowa, for more than a third of a century, having united with it in 1870 under the pastorate of Rev. J.B. Hardy, who so lately preceded her to the better world. While, on account of her sickness, she was not enabled to attend church services, yet her pastors and the church officers always found her interested in the affairs of the church, having her contributions laid aside for its various interests. Though often discouraged yet through Christ, who suffered before her and for her, never ceased striving for the crown of eternal life.
The burial took place May 9 from the home of D.C. Sleggel, the funeral services being conducted by her pastor Rev. J.E. Newsom, with interment in the Brooklyn cemetery.
