HARRIETTE S. KELLOGG
It is with sincere regret, that we chronicle the death of Harriette Kellogg, curator of the herbarium at the State Agricultural college at Ames, and associate in her work with Professor L.H. Pammel.
Miss Kellogg was born in Grinnell in 1860, August 23, the daughter of Raymond M. and Maria Parks Kellogg. She grew up in Grinnell, graduating from the high school in 1875. She pursued her studies in Grinnell College, graduating in 1880 from the classical course, receiving the degree of A.B., and later that of A.M. Her course through life has been marked by industry and few graduates of the college have given more real service in the world, and few have attained so high a degree of success.
Beginning her work as a teacher in the grades in the Grinnell schools, she became afterwards a high school teacher at Montezuma. Later, at Shenandoah, Marengo, Ia., and Grand Forks, N.D.
In 1893 she was elected instructor in Latin and Literature in Stevens seminary at Glencoe, Minn. Her love for Grinnell College has been shown by the many students she influenced to enter its halls and pursue a course of study here.
Fourteen years ago she was chosen curator of the herbarium at Ames and since then has been connected with the State Agricultural college. Here she did her work with the diligence and cheerfulness which had marked her work all the preceding years and was universally liked.
She attended the reunion of her college class last commencement with the cheer and good will that had been one of the assets of her character. Later in the summer a growth on her right side caused some apprehension and about Dec. 31 she went to the hospital at Marshalltown to have it removed. Shortly after the operation she was attacked by pneumonia, which in her weakened condition she was unable to resist.
Her death occurred after but a brief illness.
Short funeral services were held at Marshalltown conducted by Rev. S.C. Wadding of Albion, and her body was brought to Grinnell for burial. A brief service was held in the Congregational church at 10:30, conducted by Rev. E.W. Cross, and attended by her friends and friends of the family. The body was laid to rest beside her father and mother in Hazelwood.
Accompanying the body to Grinnell were Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Moninger and two daughters, Dorothy and Helen, H.W. Moninger and wife of Marshalltown and Misses Amy Noll and Lora Thompson of Ames.
