HIT BY TRAIN, WOMAN DIES
Mrs. Eva M. Pepoon, 94, of 416 Fourth Ave., Grinnell, died Sunday evening at Grinnell General Hospital of injuries she suffered when struck by a train Saturday afternoon.
Grinnell police said Mrs. Pepoon apparently attempted to beat the 102-car Rock Island Lines freight train to the Pearl St. crossing.
The train's engineer, Marlowe Launsdale, told police he sounded the whistle and applied the emergency brakes but was unable to stop the train in time. The left portion of the engine struck Mrs. Pepoon, throwing her to the south of the tracks.
Funeral services for Mrs. Pepoon are pending at the Smith Funeral Home.
