ATTORNEY C.F. DICKSON DIES, RITES CONDUCTED LAST FRIDAY

Funeral services for a long-time attorney and civic leader, C.F. Dickson, were conducted Friday at the Montezuma Presbyterian Church. Officiating at the 2 p.m. rites were the Rev. Glenn Dieken and the Rev. Martin Gruneich. The soloist at the services was Mrs. Vincent Johnson accompanied by organist Miss Alice Underwood. Montezuma business houses were closed for one hour during the services in respect to Mr. Dickson.

Serving as pallbearers were Marion Palmer, Vincent Johnson, Kenneth Schultz, Kenneth Gauley, Edward Ammann and Charles Kercheval. Burial with Masonic Rites was at the Masonic-IOOF Cemetery.

Mr. Dickson died October 13 at a Hinsdale, Ill., hospital. He was 89.

The only child of Frank and Mary (Schachtner) Dickson, Charles Frank Dickson was born in Carroll County, Iowa, on July 17, 1889. He grew up in Manning where he graduated from high school in 1899. After a few years of teaching in rural schools he enrolled at the University of Iowa and received his law degree there in 1905. He had been a member of the U of I Emeritus Club since 1955.

Soon after his graduation from college, Mr. Dickson came to Montezuma. After working as deputy county clerk under the late Judge Frank Bechly he went into law partnership with Judge William R. Lewis. He continued his law practice until 1969. He served as Poweshiek County attorney and he was a member of the Iowa State Bar Association.

In 1909 he married the former Lura May Moling at Bethany, Mo. Twin daughters, Velma and Elma, were born to the couple, Elma surviving only to the age of four. A third daughter, Dorothy, completed the family. Mrs. Dickson died in 1964.

Mr. and Mrs. Dickson joined the Montezuma Presbyterian Church in 1915. He served as an elder in the church and as a Sunday School teacher for several decades.

He was a member of Lafayette Lodge No. 52, A.F. & A.M. for more than 63 years and served the lodge as Master. He was treasurer for more than 40 years and a district lecturer since 1935.

Mr. Dickson was a member of the committee that arranged for a Carnegie grant to build the Montezuma Public Library. He served on the library board until 1964, much of the time as treasurer. Under many mayors he served almost continuously as city clerk and city attorney from the early 1920s until 1965. For about 25 years after he came to Montezuma he played in the municipal band.

He has maintained his home in Montezuma but has spent most of the last two years in Downers Grove, Ill., at the home of his two daughters, Velma and Dorothy, both of whom are teachers in the Downers Grove public schools.
