Nicholas Carr, who died at Neligh, Neb., March 23, 1901, was born in Logan county, Ill., June 28, 1836. He came to this county Dec. 23, 1847 where he made his home for a number of years. On Nov. 20, 1856, he was united in marriage with Mary A. Correll; to this union there was born seven children, two of whom died in infancy, there remaining Mrs. J.A. Stone of Grinnell, Mrs. Herbert Ross of Neligh, Neb., Jno. W. and Edward E. of Oregon and C.A. of Fremont, Neb., who with their mother survive him. The deceased enlisted and became a member of Co. K, 10th Ia Vols. in the fall of 1861 and served until 1863 when he was discharged on account of sickness. In the fall of 1865 he was elected sheriff of this county, and served as such for two terms. In the summer of 1885 he was commissioned special agent of the interior department at Washington, DC, and served in this capacity, in the western states and territories, for four years, and in the fall of 1888 he moved his family to Neligh, Neb., where he resided until his death. His remains were taken to Montezuma Monday morning and buried from the home of his brother, Cap. J.W. Carr, at 10:30, Rev. P.J. Henness officiating. At the grave the services were in charge of the Masonic order, of which deceased was an honored member.
