HELENA FLANAGAN

Helena Flanagan, 85, of 1217 Ann St., Grinnell, died of a heart ailment Wednesday, April 12, at Grinnell General Hospital.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Eugene Honig, pastor of St. Bridget's Church in Victor, officiating, assisted by William D. Olson, deacon of St. Mary's. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and pallbearers were James E. Adkins, James Cahill, Michael Hotchkin, Chris Owens, Fred Prince and David Schmitz. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery, with Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of William and Ellen Quinn Jones, she was born March 12, 1904, near Parnell. She graduated from Parnell High School and received her nursing degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Iowa City.

She was married to William Flanagan Sept. 15, 1930, in Parnell. The couple farmed east of Grinnell. Mrs. Flanagan served as a nurse at St. Francis Hospital here from 1929 to 1967. Following her husband's retirement from farming, the couple moved to the Ann St. address in 1970.

Mrs. Flanagan was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church.

She is survived by her children, Joanne Bolton of Grinnell, William of San Francisco, Calif., Marguerite Owens of Omaha, Neb., and David of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister Huberta Murrin of Denver. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983.
