Came to This Country in a Sailing Ship, Voyage Requiring Sixteen Weeks.

William Matheson Turnbull, son of James and Ann Matheson Turnbull, was born near Dorney, Scotland, April 20, 1848 and died April 4, 1930 lacking 16 days of reaching his 82nd birthday. When less than a year old he emigrated to America with his parents in 1849 traveling in a sailing vessel. The voyage required 16 weeks. He was the last member of the party which came over at that time to pass away. The family settled at Elmira, Illinois where he grew to manhood. He received his limited education in the common schools of the little country village of Elmira. He worked on the home farm with his father till 1876.

Mr. Turnbull was united in marriage with Margaret G. Turnbull of Neponset, Illinois, March 14, 1876. He purchased a 160 acre farm in Rock Creek township, Jasper County, Iowa where he has lived since. His wife died Nov. 6, 1903. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ben Buck, living on the home place. Two sons, Louis Garfield and Alexander James died at the age of 11 and 7 years with diptheria. Another daughter Nettie May died in infancy. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Margaret and Harold Buck, who have been a great pleasure to him in his later years.

Mr. Turnbull was the oldest of the eleven children. The others were: Mrs. Belle Rule of Grinnell, Iowa; Mrs. Mary Scott of Bradford, Ill.; Mrs. Flora Beattie of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; John M. Turnbull of Neponset, Ill.; Mrs. Ellen Rule, Kewanee, Ill.; sarah Turnbull, Neponset, Ill.; Mrs. Stephanna Anderson, Robison, Kas.; an infant brother who died at birth; Margaret O. Turnbull, Neponset, Ill.; George A. Turnbull, Neponset, Ill. Two sisters still survive, Mrs. Belle Rule of Grinnell who was unable to attend the funeral because of her sickness for the last few years, and Miss Margaret O. Turnbull of Neponset, Ill., who was with her brother during the last week of his illness.

He was baptized in The United Presbyterian Church of Elmira, Ill., where he attended church and Sunday School.

During his sickness he prayed for the Lord to take him to his heavenly home to relieve his terrible suffering which he bore patiently.

Funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon at 2 P.M. conducted by Rev. Mr. Fredrickson. Pallbearers were Frank Donahue, Ralph Rutherford, R.J. Hadley, Elmer Bortell, Oscar Eide.

Beattie, Neponset, Ill. Mr. Robert Scott, Miss Margaret Scott, Mr. Thomas Scott, Mr. John Scott, and Mr. James Scott, all of Bradford, Ill.; Mr. William Beattie, Owatonna, Minn.; Mr. Edward Beattie, Blooming Prairie, Minn.; Miss Annie Beattie, Blooming Prairie, Minn.; Mrs. John Turnbull, Van Cleve, Ia.; Mr. Louis Tigges and daughter Eleanor, Van Cleve, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. George Appel, Van Cleve, Iowa; Mr. Ray Turnbull, Van Cleve, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Waddel and daughter Grace, Albion,Iowa.
