H. HENRY ALDEN

H. Henry Alden, 85, of 833 East St., Grinnell, died Friday, Dec. 18, at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Caroline M. Bain officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka, Kan., with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He was the son of Thomas Dick and Harriet March Jones Alden and was born Aug. 12, 1907, in Topeka. He graduated from high school there.

In 1926 he received a B.A. degree from Washburn University at Topeka, and he received his M.A. in English from the University of Kansas in 1928. He also studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Birmingham in Barford, England, Kenyon School of English at Gambier, Ohio, and Columbia University in New York where he received a degree in library science.

Mr. Alden was an instructor in the English department at Grinnell College from 1934 to 1942. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army in the Persian Gulf Command. He returned to Grinnell College in 1946 and served as associate professor of English and associate librarian. From 1952 to 1972 he served as professor of English. He was named professor emeritus of English and librarian emeritus in July 1972.

He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi, the American Association of University Professors, the Modern Language Association, the American Library Association and the Iowa Library Association. He was past high chancellor of the American Quill Club and past president of Phi Beta Kappa, Beta Chapter of Iowa.

He wrote various short stories and book reviews for The Tanager and was editor of the publication from 1939 to 1942.

There are no immediate survivors. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Thomas Dexter Alden.
