ALFRED STRAND DIES WEDNESDAY IN LOCAL HOSPITAL
Alfred Strand, age 89, retired farmer of the Chester community, died early Wednesday morning (Sept. 6) at St. Francis Hospital following a brief illness. The son of Gabriel and Torbor Thompson Strand, Mr. Strand was born near Dunbar, Iowa on Jan. 25, 1878. He attended the Dunbar and Newburg schools and began farming early in life in the Newburg and Chester communities.
On Dec. 8, 1906, he was married to Kathrine Engelson at Marshalltown, Iowa. To this union were born seven children: Mrs. Beckham (Alice) Sutton of Rte. 3, Grinnell; Clair Strand of Grinnell; Mrs. Harold (Theresa) Beason of Afton, Iowa; Kenneth Strand of Adel, Iowa; Ralph Strand of Rock Creek Lake near Kellogg, Iowa; Donald Strand of Rte. 3, Grinnell; and Mrs. Merle (Genevieve) Russell of Bettendorf, Iowa.
Mr. Strand had farmed in the Newburg and Chester area most of his life, and had lived on the home farm for over 60 years. He was a member of the Stavanger Friends Church near Dunbar when he was a young man.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathrine, on March 16, 1963; his parents; and 10 brothers and sisters: George, Theodore, Cornelius, Edwin, and Emil Strand; Mrs. Ida McClure, Misses Nettie and Hannah Strand and twins in infancy.
Survivors include his seven children; 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; as well as one brother and one sister: Jesse Strand of Gilman and Mrs. Dena Eames of Grinnell.
Funeral services for Mr. Strand will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday (Sept. 8) at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard F. Hempenius, minister of the Chester United Church of Christ (Congregational) officiating.
Organist will be Mrs. Fred Weaver Jr. Pallbearers will be Carrol Eames, Ervin McClure, Carlton Strand, Glen Strand, G.W. Strand, and Virgil Strand. Flowerbearers will be Mr. and Mrs. Albert Plesek and Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Knutson.
Burial will be in Chester cemetery.
