AUGUST ZIRBEL FUNERAL HELD TUESDAY

Funeral services for August G. Zirbel were conducted Tuesday, August 23, by the Rev. Howard Hayes at the Steffy Funeral Home. Miss Alice Underwood was the organist.

Casket bearers were Tom Ross, Cliff Smith, Roy Wilhite, Louis Schoales, George Ingram and Calvin Harden. Burial was in Masonic-IOOF Cemetery at Montezuma.

Mr. Zirbel, 94, died Sunday, August 21, in a Grinnell hospital.

The son of Sophia and Albert Zirbel, he was born Dec. 6, 1871, in Germany. The Zirbel family came to the United States in 1872 and settled in Illinois. They moved to Iowa in 1884 and settled on a farm northeast of Montezuma.

On Nov. 6, 1896, he married Mary Cheshire and to this union six children were born. They established a home on a farm near Montezuma and spent most of their married life farming in this area. In 1935 they moved to Montezuma where Mr. Zirbel worked at various jobs.

Mrs. Zirbel died in 1941 and Mr. Zirbel maintained his home in Montezuma. He spent considerable time visiting his children.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Helen Emal of Iowa Falls and Mrs. Kathryn Peterson of St. Paul, Minn.; two sons, Paul of Chicago and Warren of Montezuma; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ida McClure of Grinnell; two brothers, Albert of Brookings, Ore., and Henry of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two sons, five brothers and one sister.
