The Grinnell (IA) Herald; Jan. 12, 1897

--Last Thursday evening, Jan. 7th, at eight o'clock, Mr. Henry S. Marvin passed away after a long illness. Mr. Marvin came to Iowa in 1853 and to Grinnell in 1868, so he may be called one of our earlier citizens. He was born at Camden, Oneida Co., N.Y., July 20, 1825, so at his death his age was 71 yrs, 5 mo., 18 days. He was married to Miss Hannah Park March 8th, 1847. Five children were born to them, two of whom died in infancy. The three remaining are Rev. J.T. Marvin of Corning and Frank P. and Shepard Marvin of this city. Mr. Marvin united with the Cong'l church in early life, and continued an active member until his death. From 1868 until 1875 he occupied a farm west of town. He removed to this city in 1875, and has been a resident here since. The funeral was held at the Cong'l church Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E.M. Vittum. Mrs.Marvin, owing to her prolonged illness, was unable to be present. Mr. Marvin was a man of great strength of character, a man of industry and thrift. With him right was right, and there could be no compromise with conscience. He adhered strictly to his standard of right, and aimed at all times to hold the bible as his guide. Such men are too few and Mr. Marvin will be remembered by his Grinnell friends for his tenacity of purpose, for his private integrity and his devotion to the right as God gave him to see the right.
