RILEY HADLEY, 90, FORMER RESIDENT, DIES AT ELDORA
Riley Jessup Hadley, 90, father of Mrs. Arthur McDowell of Grinnell, died June 8th at an Eldora hospital.
Services were held June 10th from the New Providence Friends church with the Rev. John Baxter officiating. Graveside services were conducted by Dr. S.A. Watson, president of William Penn College. Interment was in Forest cemetery at Oskaloosa.
The son of Irvee and Julia Hadley, he was born at Richland on Sept. 9th, 1872. At the age of two, his family moved to a farm south of Union. He attended the old Friends Academy at LeGrand and William Penn College.
While at college he met his future wife, Estella Kenworthy. On June 14th, 1899, they were united in marriage and moved to a ranch near Indianola, Neb. In 1904 they returned to Iowa to reside on a farm northwest of Grinnell. His wife, Estella, died in 1935, leaving three children.
On Aug. 7th, 1936, he was united in marriage with Carrie Butler. They moved to a farm near New Providence in 1940 and in 1958, his wife, Carrie, succumbed.
During his residence at Grinnell as a farmer he served many years as district school director and as a trustee on the William Penn College board. He was a birthright member of the Friends church and was a descendant of the line of Quakers back to the time when Pennsylvania was first settled. He was also a lifetime member of the American Angus Association.
Survivors include his three children, Mrs. Arthur (Mildred) McDowell of Grinnell, Corwin and Leona Hadley of New Providence; a brother, Jesse J. of North Platte, Neb.; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Orley J. and Elam J. Hadley; and a sister, Clesta Hadley.
