The Grinnell (IA) Herald; Aug. 17, 1897

--We chronicle to-day with much regret the death at his home at four o'clock this morning of Mr. C.E. Schoff, for many years the editor of the Independent-Signal. Mr. Schoff was born in Portland, Mich., June 10, 1838. He married the estimable lady who survives him at St. Joseph, Mich., in 1865. They lived at Kenosha, Wis., where Mr. Schoff was foreman in a newspaper office. In 1869 Mr. Schoff became editor of the Champaign, Ill., Union. In 1882 he came to Grinnell to take charge of the Signal, and a few years after he purchased the Independent. During nearly all these fifteen years he has been engaged in editoral work. He wielded an able pen, at times a caustic writer, but always genial and kindly to his political opponents. We of the HERALD liked him. He was neighborly, always ready to do a favor, and apparently without a vindictive thought he supported ably the principles he believed to be right. He has been in ill health for years, and has been confined to his bed at this sickness about two weeks. We regret to lose him from Grinnell and extend our sincerest sympathy to his sorrowing wife and sons. The funeral will take place at 2 p.m., Thursday at the house.
