HELEN COFFEY, 91
Helen Coffey, 91, of Decorah, and formerly of Montezuma, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at the Ausie Hagen Home in Decorah.
Her funeral service was Saturday, March 13, at Watts Funeral Home, Montezuma, with the Rev. Dennis Dorsheimer of the Jackson Church of Christ officiating. Interment was at the Masonic-IOOF Cemetery in Montezuma.
Casket bearers were Ryan Coffey, Joseph Coffey, Matthew Coffey, Carl King, Don Broadston, Dennis Broadston and Jan King.
Helen Coffey was born Aug. 8, 1912, to Beona (Ben) and Susan (Rosie) Broadston, the youngest of five children. She graduated from Montezuma High School and married her husband, Carl F. Coffey, on Oct. 16, 1938. The Coffeys were the last couple married at the old Methodist Church just before it burned down in 1938. Carl and Helen were separated by World War II, when Carl was captured and spent over two years in a POW camp. After the war, they jointly owned and operated Coffey Electric in Montezuma. They were together until they were separated by Carl's death on July 23, 1998. Helen also worked for the Poweshiek County Sheriff and the Poweshiek County Courthouse.
Helen is survived by her son, Charles, and his wife, Debra, her grandchildren, Ryan, Joseph and Matthew.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her five older brothers, Art, Cliff, Ralph, Chris and Harold.
