HAROLD WALKER RITES IN NEWTON

Harold Gilbert Walker, 84, died Saturday, July 14, at Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton, with the Rev. Richard Bentzinger, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Newton, officiating. Burial was in Hickory Grove Cemetery near Newburg, with grandsons serving as pallbearers and honorary bearers.

The son of Robert and Rose Bell Walker, he was born March 17, 1900, on a farm near Newburg. He received his education in rural schools near Newburg.

He was married to Ruth Reed in Grinnell in 1922. They lived in Grinnell until moving to Burlington. In both cities, Mr. Walker was employed as an auto mechanic. In January 1930 he moved to Brooklyn where he was a mechanic in the Chevrolet garage for more than 20 years.

On July 16, 1934, he was married to Lillian G. Parker, who survives. They lived in Brooklyn until October 1965 when they moved to Newton to be near their children.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Walker is survived by five daughters, Darline Page of Evart, Mich., and Barbara Kalma, Marjorie Cottrell, Anabel Ballard and Jane Maple, all of Newton; two sons, Robert and Melvin, both of Newton; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Earl of Elyria, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Doris, a son, John; two brothers, Everett and Philip; and two sisters, Alma Lauber and Golda Brown.
