GEORGE HAYES PASSES AWAY

We regret exceedingly to learn of the death this morning at six o'clock of George Hayes who died at his home on south Broad Street. Mr. Hayes was for many years a resident of Sheridan township and moved to Grinnell not so very many years ago. He was one of the sterling and thrifty citizens of one of the best townships in the United States and was himself a man of high character and integrity.

George Hayes was born September 2, 1853, in the county of Londonderry, Ireland. He was the eldest son of John and Rose Ann Hayes. He received his education in the national schools of Ireland until he was nineteen years of age when he came to America to seek his fortune in the year 1872. On September 10, 1873, he was united in marriage to Maria Bothwell of Pittsburg. To this union three children were born. From there they migrated to a farm in Scott County, Iowa, where they lived for several years when they moved to Poweshiek County, Iowa, and purchased a farm in Sheridan township where he farmed until he retired to his present residence in Grinnell and lived happily to the end.

Mr. Hayes was always of a quiet, pleasing disposition, a good neighbor and citizen, always with a good word for everybody. He was a life long member of the Christian church to which he belonged at the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, Mrs. Maria Hayes, one son, John Hayes of Grinnell, two daughters, Mrs. Florence Wiley of Grinnell and Mrs. Margaret Griffith of Des Moines. He is also survived by one sister living in Ireland and nine grandchildren.

T.J. Bradley of Grinnell is a nephew. Robert J. Bradley, Alfred A. Bradley, Mrs. Florence Miller, Mrs. Jeanetta McBain, Mrs. Edith Ellis, all of Los Angeles, are also nephews and nieces.

The funeral will be held at the home at three o'clock Sunday.
