MRS. EICKELBERG RITES TODAY

Shirlee Gormly Eickelberg, 50, of 1117 Harlocke St., Iowa City, formerly of Grinnell, died Monday afternoon, Feb. 23, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

A memorial service was conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Iowa City. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home, with Dr. Alvin Desterhafp, pastor of St. Andrews's officiating.

Organist will be Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers will be Dan Agnew, Jon Baumgartner, Luther Erickson, Jim George, Bill Miller and Steve Moss. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorials in Mrs. Eickelberg's name may be made to the athletic department at Grinnell High School.

The daughter of Rodney and Ethyl Kirk Gormly, she was born Dec. 11, 1930, at Waterloo. She attended Waterloo schools, graduating from Waterloo East High School in 1948. She was married to R. John Eickelberg on Dec. 24, 1948, in Waterloo.

Mr. and Mrs. Eickelberg moved to Grinnell in November 1959. She was a member of the Grinnell Parks and Recreation Commission and also operated a pre-school. From December 1971 to August 1975 she was employed at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Co. as an associate editor. She was also a freelance writer and had several articles published in the Des Moines Register and Tribune.

In 1975, she moved to Iowa City and was associated with Riepe-Buchanan-Piper for one year. Later, she joined the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. as an agent and administrative assistant. She retired in August 1980 after becoming ill with cancer.

Mrs. Eickelberg was an editor of publication and director of human resources for the League of Women Voters Business Owners Association and was a member of the Board of Control of Women's Athletics at the University of Iowa.

Survivors include her mother, Ethyl Gormly Miller of Waterloo; her children, Terry Eickelberg of Des Moines, Phoebe O'Connor of Centerville, Sue Johnson of Mt. Pleasant, and Nancy, Julie, Peggy, Ted and Sarah Eickelberg, all of Iowa City; and eight grandchildren.
