MRS. ALICE PIERCE KASSON IS DEAD

Mrs. Alice Pierce Kasson passed away in Montezuma Jan. 11. Mrs. Kasson was one of the early settlers in Grinnell. Her father and mother, Jacob and Emily Pierce owned a farm a mile north of the Bailey corner on the Chester road. She attended the Grinnell schools and afterwards for a number of years was a teacher in room four and several of her pupils are still living here.

After discontinuing her teaching she married in *1888 Joseph Robbins Kasson. Mr. Kasson was the son of a Congregational minister who moved to Iowa from Marquette county, Wisconsin. One child was born to Mr. and Mrs. Kasson who died when quite young.

Mr. Kasson was not in strong health and passed away in 1889. The death of her husband and of her child seemed to have had a harmful effect upon the health of Mrs. Kasson and while never entirely bereft of her reason she was in a somewhat precarious condition until the time of her death. She was a reader and took abundance of books and magazines and continued her reading of the Grinnell Herald until the day of her death. Her father died in 1888 just a year before the death of her husband. A brother lived in Chicago in 1871, and was there during the Chicago fire. He was never heard from by his relatives afterwards and it was believed in the rush and tramp of escaping from the fire he lost his life.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the Snyder funeral parlor, conducted by Rev. E.M. Vittum. Music was a solo by Mrs. Margery Bouma. The body was laid to rest in Hazelwood.

Mrs. Kasson was a member of the Congregational church when Mr. Vittum came to Grinnell in 1891.

The only relative living near here was Miss Mary Kasson of Des Moines, who was present at the funeral.
