Funeral services were held on Tuexday, October 17, at the Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell, for Larry Gene Hermanstorfer, 57, who died Friday, October 13, at his home in Gilman. Rev. Jan Burnett, pastor of Living Faith United Methodist Church, Tama, officiated. The organist was Margaret Wheeler. Casket-bearers were Donald Anderson, Roger Bailey, Bob Kriegel, Clint Tanner, Brad Williams and Bruce Williams, Jr.

Larry Gene Hermanstorfer, son of Harry and Beulah Piersal Hermanstorfer, was born on May 7, 1943, in Oskaloosa, Ia. He moved with his family to Brooklyn, Ia., and was a 1961 graduate of Brooklyn High School. He also attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa.

Larry lived briefly in Colorado prior to returning to Iowa where he was employed as a mechanic in the Cedar Rapids and Brooklyn areas. He moved to Grinnell in 1971 and worked for Cunningham Plumbing and Heating and later with Parmley Plumbing and Heating. In 1975, he established L&L Plumbing and Heating in Gilman and then moved to Gilman in 1976 to make his home. He began working with Grinnell College Facilities Management in 1979 and retired in 1997.

He was a member of the American Radio Relay League and while in Gilman was a member of the Gilman Volunteer Fire Department and a former Cub Scout leader. Larry was a longtime Ham Radio operator who had communicated with people from all over the world. His call letters were KDzeroEQ. He enjoyed all forms of car racing, camping with his family, and playing his guitar. But, the most important thing in Larry's life was his family. They were his focal point, and his love and devotion towards his family will be missed.

Survivors include Larry's wife, Lenda Hermanstorfer of Gilman; his children and their spouses, Jeff and Sheryl Hermanstorfer of Montour, Chris and Cheryl Hermanstorfer of Owatonna, Mn., and Kim and Rick Bub of Mississauga, Ontario; his parents, Harry and Helen Hermanstorfer of Brooklyn; one sister, Sherrie Witte of Belle Plaine; and five grandchildren, Maria, Emily, Jacob, Cory and Dylan.

The family received friends at St. Mary's Religious Education Center, 1013 Broad Street, following the service for lunch and fellowship.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Gilman First Responders and/or Grinnell Regional Hospice.
